On Thursday, February 20th, the Miramichi Kinsmen celebrated Kin Kindness Day. This special day allows members to bring smiles to people’s faces and express gratitude to the community for their ongoing support. It also serves to celebrate and honor Kin Canada’s 105-year history of “Serving the Community’s Greatest Need.”
This year, we once again partnered with Nancy Stewart’s classes from Dr. Losier Middle School and donated $2,000 to the project. Students had to apply and be selected to participate in the program. The goal was to identify a need in the community and use the funds to help address it. The students chose to focus on food insecurity as their primary issue. To raise awareness and support for this cause, they decided to host an event where they would give out hot dogs, snacks, and beverages while collecting cash donations for “Jeremie’s Mission.” This organization helps provide food and meals to those in need in the Miramichi area. The project was entirely student-driven and overseen by project chairman and current Club President, Anthony Gray, who is also an Education Assistant at Dr. Losier Middle School.
The event was held at the Beaverbrook Kin Centre and saw a strong turnout. Community members, local government officials, and community leaders were in attendance, along with coverage from local media.
Over $300 was raised for Jeremie’s Mission, and care packages were donated to the Street Outreach Team from the John Howard Society.
Overall, the project was a tremendous success, and we are very proud of everyone involved, especially the students. They definitely achieved their goal of raising awareness about food insecurity in our community.
