Beaverbrook Kin Centre

On September 16th, 1953 the former Town of Newcastle held their first council meeting in the new Beaverbrook Theatre and Town Hall following an official opening ceremony.

Lord Beaverbrook, Honourary Mayor of Newcastle, presided over the ceremonies and was so impressed with the architecture and interior design, he asked the town to not make any changes to it in monument of the people who designed it.

The building, which was a gift from Lord Beaverbrook, was considered one of the finest civic buildings in Canada at the time.  The structure housed an auditorium, which seated 450 and was constructed of Northumberland County-cut sandstone, fire-resistant brick and finished in a neo-classic design.

The building was used as a Town Hall until 1995 when the Town of Newcastle, and The Town of Chatham amalgamated to become the City of Miramichi.
